Since the beginning of the European integration process, Africa has held an important place in European external relations. The focus was almost exclusively on economic and social development and cooperation but gained a political dimension in the 90's. This paper deals with Africa as perceived via the EU's security priorities, its concerns and interests in Africa, what their drives are and how much these interests converge. Finally, it addresses some challenges and difficulties for an effective EU presence in addressing African security problems.
