Âmbito e conteúdo
This chapter will argue that “structured multilateralism” is not just in the German national interest, but indeed the best way to develop international order in the globalised world. The first section will analyse that a unipolar world cannot provide such order since it is inherently unstable. The second section will examine the experience and evolution of the European Union and its emerging relationship with the United States, with special reference to Germany’s experience and attitude. The third section will discuss the link between global and regional structures of order, and the final section will look at a special case of multilateralism—the relations between the EU and other emerging regional structures such as Mercosul.
