Âmbito e conteúdo
The present study is concerned with the definition of NATO as not only a treaty for the defence of certain region but, especially given the fact that that region has no special geographical meaning and exists solely by virtue of the definition given to it in the treaty itself, is defined as a contract between its members to defend its security and positively intervene in matters of regional conflict when deemed necessary. Evaluating the geographical and political strategies and layout of NATO and its members, it is concluded that not only has NATO intervention surpassed the provisions made by the treaty but also has, oftentimes, stemmed from national interest rather than common relevance. It is then proposed that the principles of 'common responsibility' and 'non-singularity' should guide Western policies out of area in those instances where general as opposed to uniquely national interests are being defended. Policies should thus remain individual when these do not affect other allies' vital interests.
