This introduction explains how An Open Europe in a Multipolar World: Lessons from the Portuguese Experience deals with the issue of European affirmation as an open and multilateral agent, with capacity to act in a multipolar international scenario, perceived through the Portuguese perspective. It is indebted to a paper written by the same author in 1986, “Portugal’s European Path”, about Portugal’s world view as a member of the EU, benefiting from the twenty-year hindsight of the theme.
