Âmbito e conteúdo
The aim of this report is to analyse the situation of the migrants from the group of states generally known as the South Mediterranean Countries and its effects on European security and foreign policy. There is, however, a major definitional problem that must first be addressed: what is to be understood by the term “migration”. After providing a brief definition of “migration” and its causes, the present text reflects on, on the one hand, the relations between migration and security, and, on the other hand, the relation between migration and transformation of European societies. Concerning this last topic issues such as racism and xenophobia and actual distribution of immigrants by regions of origin are analysed, paired with the possible solutions regarding the co-ordination of immigration policies in the EU, the regulation of immigration flows, promotion of development and incorporation of immigrants.
