Âmbito e conteúdo
Portuguese mediation in the Angolan conflict was the result of Lisbon's effort to redefine post-colonial relations with Lusophone Africa. This paper takes an extensive look at that effort and what international impulses have influenced it. It analyses the failure of the Bicesse peace agreement and the military constitution of UNITA and FNLA. Transitions both to the new political system and to new power relationships were factors that brought even more difficulties to the Angolan scene. The author debates whether the war was an ethical conflict and the future of Angolan democratization.
