Energy is a very significant component of Mediterranean trade, comprising a very important component of total imports for some Mediterranean countries. All flows considered, the Mediterranean is, together with the Gulf itself and the Strait of Malacca, a crucial transit and potential choke point for global oil supplies and trade. Considering this situation, the attention of security analysts has focussed on the possible relationship between energy supplies and Mediterranean security. The main thesis of the present text is, notwithstanding, that, when the details are considered, this relationship appears to be far more tenuous than a superficial consideration may suggest. Energy, in the end, is unlikely to ever become a significant security consideration in Mediterranean affairs.
