In the present paper, the author questions the premise of a predetermined title on which this paper is supposedly based (“Economic Change and Social Cohesion in Eastern Europe”) as it is implies that social cohesion is a necessary prerequisite for the success of economic change. However, it is argued that it is wrong to presume that full-scale social cohesion can be displayed in the face of any kind of economic change, thesis to which the paper will try to argue for, especially in the light of the political, social and economic conditions of Eastern Europe. For this, the notions of both economic change and social cohesion are reflected upon, focusing on the question of the minimum social support. It is finally concluded that given the inherent contradictions between economic change and social cohesion, change in Eastern Europe will be much more protracted than the optimists would predict
