On the threshold of the millennium, the present paper recalls the perceived positive Portuguese experience of structural funds application as it is of particular interest to those countries applying for membership of the EU and the next cycle of development aid scheduled for 2000. Bearing this in mind, the Portuguese experience is presented, conjoined with the author’s own personal assessment of the positive and negative aspects in applying structural funds. This exchange of information will prove beneficial for the future of Europe and the challenges of the enlargement process. Moreover, given that regional disparities are naturally a threat to the economic and social cohesion of the European space and decision-making processes, the priority attributed to the issue of structural funds in preparing the accession of the new candidate countries for membership of the EU is one of the key aspects for its success.
